Removable appliance with hair grip apron spring

LDBOS: 478

This removable appliance is a unique example in our collection of an appliance having been fixed by a patient. In this case the removable appliance had been designed for a 15 year old patient. The appliance had a high labial bow and an apron spring which is designed to retract an incisor. Apron springs are usually made from 0.4mm round stainless steel wire but when it became detached the patient used a hair grip to construct an apron spring and attached it to the appliance by twisting it around the labial bow. According to the notes which were found with the appliance, the spring continued to work.

We’d be interested in any other examples of appliances fixed by patients which continued to work after they had been fixed.
