Board of Trustees

The ruling body of the Society. It is responsible for managing the Society's affairs and ensuring that it pursues its charitable objects

The members of the Board are the Trustees of the Society and Directors of the Company.The members are the President, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and the Directors of Clinical Governance, Clinical Practice, Education, External Relations, Professional Development and Research.  The Honorary Patron attends Board meetings but is not a Trustee or a Director.

President

Dr Nikki Atack

Nikki Atack qualified from Bristol University in 1989 where she also completed her postgraduate orthodontic studies in 1996 following which she undertook her senior registrar training at Bristol and Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. She was appointed consultant orthodontist in Taunton and Yeovil in 2001 and returned to Bristol as consultant and honorary senior clinical lecturer in 2005.

Nikki is the immediate past-chair of the Consultant Orthodontist Group completing her term in December 2018 and was the Directorate of Clinical Governance and Trustee of the Society from 2011-2015.

She plays an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate training and is currently the orthodontic lead for the dental undergraduate programme in Bristol. She teaches on the orthodontic undergraduate, postgraduate and therapist programmes, is an examiner for the RCS Edinburgh MOrth and a past examiner for the Bi-collgiate MOrth and ISFE. She is also editor and co-author of the popular ‘Postgraduate Notes in Orthodontics’ and the ‘Undergraduate & Therapists Notes in Orthodontics’.

Over the past 10 years she has acted as both a Trust Appraiser and Mentor and during her time as Chair of COG helped develop the BOS’s new consultant mentoring scheme. Her clinical interests are focused around multidisciplinary care in particular the orthodontic-paediatric dentistry interface and has lectured widely on this topic.

Honorary Secretary

Dr Simon Littlewood


Simon Littlewood is a Consultant Orthodontist at St Luke’s Hospital in Bradford, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Leeds Dental Institute. His undergraduate studies were at Newcastle University, his specialist orthodontic training at University of Leeds and post-CCST consultant training in Manchester.

He has previously been Director of Professional Development, running the British Orthodontic Conference 2013-14 and is currently a Co-Director of the Yorkshire Orthodontic Therapy Course with Trevor Hodge. He was previously Chair of Examiners for the ISFE consultant exam, and is currently Chair of MFDS exam for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has published over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals and co-authored the best-selling textbook An Introduction to Orthodontics. He is regularly invited to lecture both in the UK and internationally, having taught in over 25 different countries.

       

Honorary Treasurer

Professor Grant McIntyre


Grant McIntyre is a Consultant / Honorary Professor in Orthodontics in Dundee with a special interest in orthodontic care for patients with cleft lip and palate and for patients requiring orthognathic surgery. Grant's research themes include growth, cleft care, effectiveness of orthodontic treatment and imaging the dentofacial complex with over 120 papers having been co-authored to date. Grant is currently an examiner for BDS, MFDS and MOrth along with various Masters / PhD examinerships, and is a former ISFE examiner, Joint Clinical Director for Dundee Dental Hospital & Research School and SAC Chair. Grant is also the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Professor Susan Cunningham


Professor Susan Cunningham is Professor and Honorary Consultant at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and the Eastman Dental Hospital UCLH Foundation Trust. She is Programme Director for the MClinDent postgraduate programme in Orthodontics at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute; one of the largest Orthodontic programmes in Europe, with 30-35 taught graduates at any one time. She is a past Trustee for Education for the British Orthodontic Society and also honorary Secretary of the European Orthodontic Society. Her research interests are in outcomes of orthodontic treatment and patient-centred care                          

 

Director of Clinical Governance

Dr Jadbinder Seehra


Jadbinder qualified with Honours from University of Manchester in 2002 and undertook his specialty orthodontic training at both Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and Kent and Canterbury Hospitals. He was awarded his MSc with Merit from Kings College London, and obtained the Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) in 2009.

During his training he has treated many complex cases, adult and child patients and multidisciplinary cases using a range of orthodontic appliances and techniques. He is a current Royal College of Surgeons MJDF examiner and has held the position of Chairman of the National Training Grades Group of the British Orthodontic Society in 2011.                                  

Director of Clinical Practice

Dr Anshu Sood


Anshu has been a dentist for 15 years, more than five of them based in specialist practice. Having worn a brace herself at the age of 33, she can share her experiences with our patients. She also knows the value of a beautiful smile and aims to use hers whenever possible!
She is a certified user of the Invisalign system and gains great satisfaction from each and every patient who leaves the practice with a smile to be proud of. In addition, she is an active member of the British Orthodontic Society and a committee member of the Orthodontic Specialist Group

Director of Education

 Dr Sally Walker 
       


I qualified in dentistry at Newcastle University in 1999. I undertook orthodontic specialty training in Newcastle and Middlesbrough, then completed my post-CCST training in Sheffield and Mexborough. I have been a Consultant Orthodontist at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle since 2010. Education is my special interest and I have a Masters' degree in Clinical Education from Newcastle University, obtained in 2013. I am responsible for organising and delivering the orthodontic teaching programme for undergraduate dental students at UCLan Dental School. I am Training Programme Director for specialty training in orthodontics in the North East and Cumbria. I am also an examiner for the Membership in Orthodontics examination at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and Chair of the Board of Examiners for the MSc in Orthodontics at Newcastle University.

Dr Anjli Patel 



Anjli Patel completed her specialty training at the Kettering General Hospital and the Eastman Dental Hosptal in 2007. She has been a consultant since 2011 and is the co-principal of No 1 The Orthodontic Specialists in Derby.  She is the Training Programme Director for Orthodontics in the East Midlands and enjoys being involved in the orthodontic education of specialists and therapists. She has recently been the Lead for Publications on the Clinical Governance Committee and was a member of the Covid Recovery Group. 

Director of Professional Development

Dr Trevor Hodge




Trevor Hodge is a Consultant Orthodontist at the Leeds Dental Institute. Prior to this he was an undergraduate at the University of Bristol and completed his specialist training at the University of Birmingham and the Eastman Dental Institute.
At Leeds he provides postgraduate clinical training and his clinical practice has focused on the management of orthognathic cases and more recently patients with cleft lip and palate.

in 2015 he was appointed Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics at University of Leeds with research areas including clinical and applied research, health services research, and research in dental education. To date he has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals including 2 book chapters.

In 2007 he co-founded the first UK course to train Orthodontic Therapists and since this time has also been active in specialist practice. In 2018 he achieved European Board accreditation, won the Maurice Berman Prize for Clinical Excellence for the second time, and was a recipient of a World Federation of Orthodontists Regional Award of Merit.
