Dr Ansa Akram - BOSF Grant 2012

Quality of life in patients with hypodontia

BOSF Grant 2012

Primary investigator

Dr Ansa Akram

Objectives

This project aims to assess quality of life in patients with developmentally absent teeth (hypodontia) prior to the start of orthodontic treatment and towards the end of treatment. A condition specific quality of life measure designed for hypodontia patients will be used for this purpose.

Background

While we now understand to some extent the reasons why patients with developmentally absent teeth seek treatment and that hypodontia impacts on quality of life, we require evidence to prove that treatment for hypodontia has the intended effect, i.e. it addresses the reasons for seeking treatment and leads to an improvement in

quality of life.

Setting and Methodology

This investigation will comprise a multicentre qualitative study to assess quality of life in hypodontia patients at the start and towards the end of treatment, using a condition specific quality of life measure. The setting will be hospital orthodontic departments in London, Sheffield and the South West of England.

Anticipated Outcomes

The anticipated outcomes are that orthodontic and restorative treatment for hypodontia will improve oral health related quality of life and this will be seen through an improvement in impact scores.
