BOS Funding opportunities for research:

Invitation to apply for BOSF funding

As a result of the pandemic and the restrictions placed on clinical research, limited BOSF funds were utilised/allocated in 2020. As a result, we have BOSF money available to fund projects.

  1. We are pleased to advise that the following changes have been made with respect to requesting BOSF funding for research grants from 2021.
  2. We would welcome applications at any time using the existing BOSF forms. There is not going to be a formal grant call with a restricted time window in 2021.
  3. Any value of bid will be considered from a few hundred pounds to over £100,000 and all subject areas will be considered Members of the research committee will be available to advise people in completing an application if required. If you do need advice, please contact Susan Cunningham in the first instance on research@bos.org.uk

BOS Funding opportunities for audit:

BOS invites applications to fund national audit projects

The British Orthodontic Society has made up to £50,000 available to fund national audit projects. Well conducted national audits are particularly valuable to our specialty as they encourage us to reflect on our practice and compare it to national/international benchmarks. It is also part of the process of professional lifelong learning and has increasingly become a contractual requirement. The long-term nature of orthodontic care and the fact that many clinicians work in relative isolation challenges us to devise meaningful projects in both primary and secondary care environments. These require co-operation across the membership groups and the country. Many local and regional projects will lend themselves to national or web-based projects from which we can all benefit. All potential audit topics will be considered. Audit topics assessing national outcomes and multidisciplinary care (such as orthognathic treatment) will be given priority.

For more information and how to apply here. The closing date for applications is 31 December 2021.

BOS funding available for other general projects of benefit to patients (non-research or audit):

2020 and indeed the beginning of 2021 has been a very difficult time for all of us so I am delighted to be the bearer of good news. The enforced lack of spending by BOS over the last 12 months on clinical meetings, conference and face to face committee meetings means that we potentially have funds available to you, as a BOS member, to support activities in your practice or hospital department that will be of benefit to your patients. If you have an idea for a local audit project, educational event or any activity which supports or benefits your patients, please let me know. Any size of application, no matter how large or small will be considered and, if approved, the BOS will support you. Small amounts can be approved very swiftly but larger amounts may need to be approved by the Trustees before I can authorise them.  Research funding applications should continue to go via BOSF.

If you wish to make an application, or want to discuss things further with me, please contact me via the BOS Office by emailing ann.wright@bos.org.uk

I would be more than happy to talk to you on the phone or, who knows, perhaps even meet face to face!
