I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1992 and have always taken an active role in developing others; firstly as a vocational trainer in general dental practice for 9 years, then as a clinical lecturer at Birmingham and now at Bristol Dental School, following my postgraduate training and registration as a specialist in 2014. I previously organised annual programmes of CPD for BDA Hereford and Worcester dental teams and ran workshops on ethical practice for healthcare providers in the West Midlands Deanery. I have served on education committees for the BDA and the FGDP and am currently the University Teachers’ Group representative on SAC. I developed online modules and study days for the Leadership distance learning diploma for the University of Bristol, completed a postgraduate teaching certificate in 2015 and presented my educational research both nationally and internationally, on assessment of the ability of healthcare providers to self-reflect. I helped develop the clinical training and assessment programme for Bridge 2 Aid, a sustainable charity where dental personnel travel overseas to train rural healthcare providers in emergency dentistry. Since becoming a Consultant at Bristol in 2018 where I supervise postgraduate students, therapists and dental nurses in training, I have recently been appointed as Training Programme Director for the Bristol StR programme.

I graduated from Cardiff in 1985, undertook my orthodontic specialty training in Liverpool and Chester and an Academic Senior Registrar post in Liverpool and Glan Clwyd Hospital during which I embarked on a PhD alongside my clinical training. I was appointed as Consultant Orthodontist at Liverpool University Dental Hospital in 1998 and was awarded my PhD in 2002.
I was Training Programme Director in Mersey for 16 years. In previous posts, I have worked with DwSIs and am now working with therapists in a Consultant lead hospital service so am familiar with the different working relationships between members of the clinical team. I am a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers (RCSEd); a current MOrth RCSEd examiner and past-ISFE examiner.
Locally, I developed and co-ordinated the ST1-3 weekly and a monthly ST4,5 seminar programme. This is now run as North West programme for higher trainees. I have also been involved with local training initiatives for GDPs, Vocational Trainees (DFTs) and undergraduate dental students.
Nationally, I am past Chair of SAC so am familiar with national issues around training and education. I am currently involved with the GDC curriculum review. Although my primary area of interest is Speciality Training, I am keen for clinicians working in all areas of clinical practice, to gain knowledge and develop appropriate clinical skills, to enhance their roles.
